I agree with Sherman. Buy used. The differentials are pretty tough and if you buy from a reputable person you should get many many miles out of your used differential.

I would also check to make sure that the exhaust system is not preventing the driveshaft from rotating properly. It happened to a friend of mine and his symptoms were identical to yours. We felt so stupid after we figured out what was going on.
