I just did this myself a few weeks ago. All you need to do is bend some baling wire around the chain and tie the other end to any reasonable part so the chain doesn't fall all the way down there. Don't worry too much about it losing tension around the lower sprocket, the bigger problem is if it falls down there and you can't reach down to get it!

I'm going to be refreshin the 121ti head on my 02 rather shortly... running a 40 sidedrafts... puttin in a 292 cam with oversized valves.. gettin it flowed.. I was looking at the head today... once I take off the timing chain cover and disassemble is there a way I can keep the timing chain snug and up there... the chain tensioner says it's oil dampened with a stop on it so it shouldn't shoot out.. was planning to prob just jam a piece of wood or something to keep the timign chain snug around the lower bits... would like to avoid taking apart the lower piece to align the timing chain again.. Ne one have experience with this and offer ne words of wisdom before I embark upon this adventure?? It's always greatly apreciated...
