Maybe engine work does cost less now. Back in the mid 80's I terminally trashed my engine and even somehow managed to get two rings partially wedged into one groove on one piston racing against an RX7 on the Wakehurst Parkway (Sydney-young and stupid). I was a student at the time working three separate part-time jobs to pay the rebuild bill which cost about the same as the car did.

NSW Fire Department did a very good job putting out my car!
