Next you said that Cylinders 1 & 2 = no noise, try adding more fuel, (Mixture Screw for each cylinder) slowly to each till you hear the noise. The noise is then balanced to be equal on all 4 cylinders w/ fuel +/-.

The 'no noise' was the absence of the tapa ... tapa ... tapa ... tapa ..., which was heard from 3 and 4. I did try adjusting the mix on 1&2 to see if I could duplicate the sound but could not (also 3&4 to see if I could get rid of it. I'll check this again next go round.

One area that I did not check was the trottle linkage between the pairs and this is what I was missing - that is how to balance between the two. Would this be the correct approach?

Disconnect the linkage (engine at operating temp) and check. If uneven, the only adjustment would be the idle setting. Thinking about this would it be good to have the linkage disconnected for both idle setting and mix? Then, when done, reconnect the linkage and adjust should the idle change at all?

Also, when choosing mix settings, I tended toward leaner as when 'gunned' a richer mix could produce a blump ... blump ... blump sound as the RPMs lowered. A leaner mix could eliminate this and the idle speed and acceleration was the same. Did I make the right choice?
