Brake Light Problem (archive)

I was almost rear-ended last week by someone who was both attentive enough to maintain a safe stopping distance in front of him, and kind enough to inform me that my brake lights were out. I change my own oil, but I am a little out of my element when it comes to electrical systems. I cleaned and lightly sanded all of the contacts in the tail light assemblies, but this didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.
