If your alternator light is on constantly, then your alternator and voltage regulator are not working for some reason. 1st check that the fan belt is tight.

If you have a Haynes or the factory service manual, there is a procedure in them for testing the alternator and regulator. If the alternator is going bad, it's not a bad idea to also replace the voltage regulator at the same time.

On a personal note, buying a used voltage regulator doesn't make much sense. The newest used voltage regulator of a '02 has got to be at least 25 years old now. Better to buy new if you can afford it.
