The smoke on ecel is worn valve guies an seals. Were these replaced when you had the head overhauled? As for the ticking, all engines with mechanical (as opposed to hydraulic) valve actuation are going to tick to some degree, but if yours is really pronounced even after adjusting the clearances, something is amiss. Your rockers and shafts could be worn, and the aforementioned valve guides, if really worn, will allow the valve stems to move around, which will change the clearances minutely and cause increased clatter.
