If the car is good other than the body rust, take it, buy a rust-free shell (about $1000) and put all the mechanical parts from the rusty car into the good shell. Or, if you're on a budget and the rusty car is not dangerously rusty (i.e. it is structurally sound), just get it running and drive it til' it rusts out from under you. For info on the engine, etc, go to bimmers.com and select the '02 page. There's tons of info there.
