What can the various colors of exhaust smoke indicate again? i always mess this up.

reason i ask, a friend of mine bought a '87 Toyota Tercel (1.6l carb) and its constantly smoking black out of exhaust at all rpm's, and doesn't idle vary well (although after a couple grand it smooths out nicely). wondering if that indicates something to narrow it down. I think the car had been sitting for at least the winter before she bought it..
