Now that I have the front subframe out, I have a question. I've got the strut assemblies out, and I took them over to the local shop to compress the springs and take them apart. They tell me that my strut inserts don't come out... can anyone tell me whether this could be true? It's a '74 tii. In any event, I need to get them out. How do I do this? I've tried holding them in a vise and tapping on the outer strut assembly to push them out, but to no avail. Is there something else holding the insert in? What if the shop is correct, and they are not replaceable. According to the shop manual, I think this was the case with some older 2002s, but I think the thing is supposed to come out anyway. Advice? Thanks as always.

I just took the front suspension out of my '68 last weekend and removed the inserts and such today. Unless I am totally missing the boat with your question... what I did is hold the strut in a vice and got a wrench (like a pipe wrench) on the collar at the top uf the strut. Oh yea, I forgot to mention that due to the 33+ years of moisture (rust) I had to use a little heat on it as well. Once the collar breaks free the strut insert slid out (it took some work - a long block tapping against the nut while the strut was still in the vice).

HTH

Good luck!
