The 530i alt, sounds like it doesn't have a internal regulator. My 45 amp alt has 3 prongs too ('72), so you may need to obtain a reg to use it. I'm going the other way, '78 55amp alt out of 320. Auto Electrician told me today that it is possible to replace the internals and have 80 amp
alt (Bosch). Have to talk to him again, so will post any news.

I recently found a 65 amp alternator from a '77 530i. I was under the impression this was a direct bolt on replacement upgrade for my stock '76 2002 45 amp alt, but its not (3 prong vs. my single prong). Can anyone suggest the cleanest replacement upgrade alternator to use? The year, BMW model and amperage would be very helpful. Thanks.
