like near that oval embossing were indeed painted black. Headlite bucket support bottoms too. Only on light color cars though, fjord, inka, chamonix, etc). They were painted semi-flat black by hand with a brush, and the really cool part is that you can see runs and everything.

The theory was to keep the light parts from showing through the grilles. Essentially, if you can see the light paint through the grilles, paint it black if you're a stickler for originality. Mercedes had a similar practice on their cars too, and Alfa as well.
