Now that I have the front subframe out, I have a question. I've got the strut assemblies out, and I took them over to the local shop to compress the springs and take them apart. They tell me that my strut inserts don't come out... can anyone tell me whether this could be true? It's a '74 tii. In any event, I need to get them out. How do I do this? I've tried holding them in a vise and tapping on the outer strut assembly to push them out, but to no avail. Is there something else holding the insert in? What if the shop is correct, and they are not replaceable. According to the shop manual, I think this was the case with some older 2002s, but I think the thing is supposed to come out anyway. Advice? Thanks as always.

Once you have the nut off, you just pull out the insert. if it is rusted or stuck this becomes more difficult because you can't really good leverage... This is what i did. drill a small hole at the bottom of the tube (bottom of spindle) just large enough that you can drift it out, then plug up th hole with epoxy, or silicone. it takes only a couple of taps.
