When I looked at this possibility, it certainly wasn't less expensive to convert to a 5 speed.

Comparing apples to apples. First, you have to get a good 5 speed. If you get a used one, you are probably getting an old transmission that is as iffy as a used 4 speed. Its a lot of expense to buy a used transmission only to have it fail in a little while. I got a used one from that "BMW Parts Location Service" in Mass. It failed in 4 months, out of warranty, not even useful as a core ($400 + labor down the drain).

Then for the 5 speed, you have to modify a lot of stuff, including the driveshaft. More $$.

So, a good rebuilt 4-speed is definately cheaper than a rebuilt 5 speed modification. I bet that a 5-speed rebuild/conversion is half again as expensive as a 4-speed rebuild.

Only go with a 5 speed if you need the highway gear.
