I rebuilt mine. If you are capable of building an engine (exluding machining, of course, just disassmebly, inpsection, parts purchase and assembly), you are capable of rebuilding a 232 4-speed. The tricky part is getting the input shaft bearing out. Shops use a special tool that costs about $400. You can make your own (requires you to replace the bearing, can't be reused) for a few dollars if you already have a gear/bearing/pulley puller set (mine was $40). It is rather labor intensive to get everything done right (probably took me 100 hours, but I'm slow), and the bearing, synchros and seals run $400.

The results IMHO are worth it. Once rebuilt, that tranny should run a long, long time.

Advice needed on my transmission. The tranny was starting to get hard to put into 2nd (synchros, I think). Now that the tranny is out, I want to get it rebuilt. Can I just take it to any reputable transmission shops for a rebuild? Is this BMW rocket science, i.e., does this job require special BMW expertise, tools, etc.? Or will any good transmssion shop do? I am in the Houston, TX area.

Thanks!
