Looking at a 1976 2002 that has the "Certification Label"
on the driver's door edge that shows the VIN.
The label that is affixed to the upper steering column shows
a number that doesn't match the VIN on the door edge. I'm assuming that these two numbers are supposed to match.
All the labels under the hood are either gone or have been painted over. Car runs well and is clean. Current owner and
previous owner can't shed any light on this. Advice please.

Yes 237**** match on door label, plate on top of sterring coloum, and I.D. plate right hand side engine compartment which should still be on your car perhaps covered by repaint's....try scratching off some paint if you really want to see if cars been "pieced" together. While on the topic check #'s stamped on engine top left to the right of starter (looking over left side of car)where engine meets trans. Some can get real anal about "matching #'s" but I say who cares as long as you have a good running fun car....unless you have a real nice stock unrestored example than perhaps this is of importance.
