it seems easy enough to make the backing from formica or plexi, but how would i attach the
clips that hold the door panel to the door?? thanks

We used some laminated formica that is made of fiberboard.Its covered on one side ,so its real water resistant but its easy to work with.They sell it at Home depot and Lowes for $25-$30 a sheet.
