You're absolutely right and this is something to consider, but a custom head gasket is an inexpesive way to play with compression ratios. It allows you to start with an existing engine rather than have to shell out the initial cost to build up one with custom pistions. When on the low side of the turbo tuning learning curve, your chances of messing up are higher. It would certainly feel worse to damage your newly built, custom pistion engine than something you've already driven for a few years. Once you're on the high side of the turbo tuning learning curve, invest the $$$ for a purpose built engine.


Using the thick head gasket moves the piston flats away from the flats in the head and reduces squish. This is bad for the burn, and is a step away from detonation resistance.
