ok you need to put the engine to top dead center (TDC) for cylinder 1. Then put the distributor is so that it points toward the passenger fender(#1 spark plug lead)

My favorite way of finding TDC for #1 is by taking the valve cover off and looking at the cam. TDC for 1 happens when the cam is at full overlap for #4. This is when the cam is equally lifting the intake and exhaust valve.

In a perfect work you should also be able to find the notch on the crank pulley and line it up with a mark on the timing chain cover..
