shift rubber?? (archive)

i just replaced the whole shift linkage on my 1976 2002, and i noticed a ring on the under-side of my car that has no grease on it and this ring is right around the shift lever under the car, is there supposed to be a foam or rubber ring that is place there before you put the shift lever on. how much does it cost or is it nla. thank you very much for your help.
