You can test the switch with a test light by loosening the two wires slightly, just enough to put alligator clips on each spade...clips should run to + and - side of a 12v test light. Switch should "work" when it's released (as opposed to when it's compressed as is intuitive). As long as you have power to it, the test bulb should light when the switch is released. No light=fault in switch or in wiring up to the switch. If the switch works your problem is downstream...

As Dougiefresh mentioned, the brake switch is suspect. Also check that there is power to the switch from the fuse box.
