If what I've heard recently is indeed pinging its like a muffled rattle / clatter (similar to the sound of what I think a handful of nuts in a coffee can wrapped in a towel and rolled across the floor would make).

I can best hear it when there is something surrounding the roadway (bridge railing, trees, hills). Removing my foot from the gas avoids the noise - as does retarding the timing.
