My guess would be that you can more easily change the drive speed of the alternator when you don't drive it on the engine. If you're not doing night-time racing, you don't need much of a charge going into the battery (except for the rules you could probably live without an alternator altogether for most sprint races).

The lower driven speed probably makes a slight (very slight) increase in efficiency because of lower frictional losses.
