How come I go thru so many alternators? (archive)

Are re-manufactured alternators rebuilt to last only 3 years or so or is there something about my 76 that likes to chew them up. Going down the highway Saturday the ignition/alt light comes on very dim but is a lot brighter by the time I get home. To be sure it's not just a light problem I keep the car running and disconnect the battery. Sure enough in about 5-10 seconds she quits. Last time I ordered on the place sent me a 320i alt by mistake. A litte rewiring by the mechanic and she runs fine--for about 3 years. At least this time there were was warning by the light cause last time it just wouldn't start since the battery was cooked. I'm not too lucky on starters either.
