Actually, quite a good idea! Gets a little more weight off the front, more room under the hood, and lets the engine rev quicker (like lightening the flywheel.) Also allows you to gear the alternator to how much power you need during a race, no use turning an alternator at twice engine speed it you are already reving to 6-grand and an alternator puts out enough at 2-grand! And on a race car, you don't sit around idling a lot, so you get to charge the battery when you are moving, which is usually at rather high speed. I like it!
