If this is the case, then yes, you must remove the forward belt in order to get a new belt on the inner pulley groove. Best thing is to just replace both belts, since you'll have both of them off anyways.
Alternator belts generally run over the water pump as well. The other belt you are talking about should be removable in the same way as the alternator belt. Typically, at least one pulley along the route is moveable, so that tension can be adjusted. Look for some way to loosen that forward belt by moving the gizmo it's connected to (A/C compressor, or what-have-you). Sometimes there's also an "idler" pulley, a small pulley whose only function is to provide tension on the belt; these are often used on A/C compressor setups, because the compressor is too big and heavy, and vibrates too much, to be fit with an adjustable mount.

this question is on my other car (not as much fun to work on as the 02) and i already posted it to the e30 board but i know that the folks on this board are a lot more responsive and helpful so plwase show some tolerance and give me some advice if you have any.
had to replace the alternator on an 87 325e. along with the alternator i need to replace the v belt. i've never replaced a v-belt on this car before but i figured that it wouldn't be too hard. as i look at it the only way that i can see to put it on is to loosen and remove the belt that runs from the pulley on the lower part of the block to the compressor (at least i think that's the thing that this particular belt is running to - it's on the right side of car).
here are the questions:
does that lower belt (compressor to lower block pulley) have to be removed to put the alternator v-belt on??
if that belt has to come off how do you do it?? i don't see how it's done.
it looks like the v-belt circles the alternator, the water pump and the lower engine block pulley. is that right?? i can't find any diagrams in the bentley manual that i have.
thanks all.
