I have the same set up with the 3.90 rear and have not noticed the problem you mentioned. When I converted, I bought the shift arm and shortened bracket from Metric Mechanic in KC MO. I have to drive in southern Missouri often with fairly steep grades and shift from 5th to 4th often with no problems. With a 3.90 4th becomes a passing gear. It is fun. I've got about 90k in this conversion, and the only problem I have had (and it's my fault)is the alignment between trans and driveshaft. Be sure the trans doesn't ride to low in the rear mount. You don't want more 1mm deflection in the guibo. I never blew a guibo, but went thru 2 with cracks before I wised up and reworked my rear mount. Meanwhile, back to your situation, I would check out the rubber mounts and configuration of your shift mount to see if binds. (this setup really likes a 40DFAV Weber)

I just completed the conversion, and I love having the 5th gear (especially with the 3.90 diff!), but I'm not real happy with the actual shift quality. Actually, it can be a real pain!

I can row through the gears first through fifth no problem, but downshifting from fifth to fourth is difficult to do. I almost have to take it to neutral to get it down to fourth. Fifth to third downshift is no problem. It's not a syncro problem, but in the shift pattern itself.

I talked to another guy who has the 245/5 tranny in his '02, and he said he has the exact same problem. What's up with that? This is a pretty common upgrade, has anyone else experienced the same thing? Is it an install problem, a tranny problem, or just an inherent quirk of this tranny?
