rails between the existing 4spd mounts and the centre bearing mounts and put the crossmember on the rails. no new holes and no new welds...

I've done the "use existing 02 type mount" method, using existing crossmember.

You need to deal with exhaust pipe and flange clearance that no one seems to mention. Using the existing crossmember results in it being very close to the exhaust pipe and the flange. It's almost like you want to use something thinner overall than the 02 crossmember, regardless of what you use (320i cross member, eg.)
