Those prongs were actually little balls that the pedal base snapped onto, making two ball sockets that the pedal rotated back and forth on.

With time, corrosion, and lack of lubrication, the balls deteriorate and the rubber pedal base also wears out. If the ball sections still look good, I'd suggest a new pedal from one of the regular suppliers. If the car is a beater, you can make a small cut in the base of the pedal and carpeting and use a plastic wire tie to hold the base in position.

Another thing to check for is the plastic bushing on the end of the metal rod that the pedal pushes down on. Many times this bushing is missing, or just plain worn too much, and the resulting extra clearance allows the pedal to feel sloppy or slip off. If the bushing is there, make sure it is greased well.

Hope some of this helps,

vince

My accelerator pedal keeps slipping off the prongs (or whatever those things are) and is making acceleration difficult. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
