I have pulled and reinstalled my '02 engine without removing the tranny (5 speed). It's not difficult at all, and saves the time of disconnecting the slave cylinder, speedo cable, driveshaft, reverse light wires, and exhaust downpipe. I just took the three brass nuts off the exhaust downpipe flange at the manifold flange and left the downpipe in place. When reinstalling, you'll need an assistant to help position the engine, and you will have to experiment with positioning to get the tranny input shaft to slide in, but the install took me about 45 minutes (not including connecting the wiring, fuel system, etc.) This method is definitely trickier than removing/installing the engine/tranny as a unit, but it saves a lot of time and work.
