Plug the hoses that would go to the bottom of the radiator. Fill the block with water up to the top (remove the temp sender at the top of hose casting so all the air can leave)using the upper radiator hose. Block off the upper hose, or the water pump will slosh a lot of coolant out. The water pump will circulate water through the thermastat (it and it's hoses are in place, right?) and you can feel how hot the water gets in the upper return line. If you plan to do this for more than a couple of minuites, refill the system, 'cause air will be pumped from bubbles in the head.
