The stock 4-speed shifter bracket mounts only to the transmission. There are two bolt/bushing assemblies on the top side, and there's one diagonal brace assembly. If the bushings start to go, no amount of bolt tightening will secure the bracket.

As I was under the car investigating a possible guibo problem and noticed that my shifter moves around more than it seems it should. It almost looks like the plate that the shifter connects to should be secured to the tunnel, but it just sort of hangs there. No bolts or bolt holes, no broken welds....looks like it wasn't connected, but it just doesn't look right. I do not have another '02 handy to compare so I thought I would post it for you guys. Any help???? Thanks!
