The heat shield was not shielding enough and the brown plastic screw-on-boot-thingy the germans are so fond of had cracked.
When you say "shuts off' do you mean that if you did nothing the motor would be dead, or that it is bucking and running very badly?
I am not saying your problem is not k-fisch (or injector) related. I thought my problem was fuel at the time. I am glad that it was not.
Might want to check fuel flow into the pump (I know, it works better when floored so ....). The fuel should fill a quart can in 10 or 15 seconds. I am not too sure of the actual flow rate value, but it is a bunch.
