I didn't want to spend the cheese for the threaded inserts so I used stainless steel pop rivets. If you get the right size they work great. I did have to drill a deeper counterset in the attached piece but that was no big deal.

I took off the left side mirror and measured it to make sure right side matches. Then I used the attached piece as a template for the holes. Use masking tape as an alignment tool and also to cover the surrounding surface so a slipped drill doesn't ruin your day. Use a punch to start the holes.

I recommend waxing the area really well before starting and painting the holes for rust protection.
