Would a K&N air filter hurt performance? (archive)

As Dwight Chew mentioned in earlier post, there's a great article on about tii injection...

It makes a mention that removing the stock air-cleaner housing and replacing it with a single large K+N filter may actually hurt performance because the injector pump is tuned for a certain amount of air.

Anyone do this upgrade and discover performance drawbacks or reliability problems? (I haven't done this yet, but am thinking about it... However, I remember an old Beetle I owned and I did the same thing; replaced the ugly oil-filled air cleaner with some punky-looking chrome flat-top, and I think that engine never forgave me... )
