You're in the chicago area, correct? I seem to remember that you are originally from there...in which case I can totally understand "going home..." I did the midwest thing for about a year, headed home soon as I could. I'm definitely here to stay at least for a while. Anyway, good luck with your new/old home, and don't forget to visit the west coast 02s and the people that belong to them.
I've never seen concrete proof of any "transition" models. It's always been a figment of someone's imagination and easy to spot in person.
What is the car's VIN #? That will give us a clue as to how "early" or "late" it is.
I used to live in California, where 2002s are easy to find, and it was very, very common to see a car where the front end was replaced due to collision damage. Those bumpers don't provide mych protection.
If it's a tii.....the radiator support that the radiator bolts to will NOT have a round tube section at the upper right side (engine exhaust side) of the radiator support. This round tube
was for the regular 1600/2002 air filter snorkel boot to be clamped to, and tis and tiis did not have the same air filter as the regular 2002s, so they did not have this round tube.
If the round tube is there, the front end was replaced, and with a front end from a later car with plastic grilles regardless of what the owner says.
I'm looking at a late 1971 2002 tii here in Italy that has round tails and the newer style grills (black plastic). I have no reason to doubt the owner who has documents and family photo history that shows that it has never been altered. The car is a very low mileage car. (64000 km)
Does anyone have concrete info that these "transition" models were ever built?
