Will the stock wiring handle more power? better? Was it expensive?

Not sure what upgrade is in question, but if it's a retrofit type where the ballast and lamp are installed, then there's a component of lighting that's missing - the optical design. The HID lamp has different positioning of the point source than the halogen, so just substituting the lamp alone will not produce the desirable distribution - in fact, it could backfire and blind & piss other drivers, both oncoming and the ones in the front who's having to readjust the rearview mirrors. IF upgrading, it's best to find the full assembly, with reflecor and refractor designed for that lamp source.

MOst, if not all current HID systems, are currently using 35watts of power. That's considerably less wattage than conventional halogen @ 55watts.

The cost to upgrade, from what I'm seeing is anywhere from $550 (just retrofit kit) to $1200 for full assemblies.

HTH
