My exeperience thus far is not to half-ass anything with the engine. If you are going to do the rod bearings, pull the engine out, take out the crank and have it polished. Have it mic'd and use some plastigage to make sure the bearings are within spec, or better yet replace all the bottom end bearings and rear main oil seal. They are cheap compared to having to open the engine back up. Ask how I know.
