16-inch wheels possible for 2002 (archive)

I have 6x15 Rial wheels on my 1972 2002tii touring (factory flared fenders) with 195/50-15 Comp T/A. The wheels are normally supposed to go on an E21 3-series, but I made them fit. There are not many tires available in this size any more. The Comp T/As are on back order for 8-10 weeks from TireRack.
Has anyone made 16-inch wheels fit on an '02? The tires may hit the struts if I try to fit 7x16 E21 Alpina wheels (??). There are more tires choices with 16-in wheels these days.
