Go ahead, but it's probably not the bearings... (archive)

If the throttles seem smooth everywhere except close to idle, it's probably not the bearings. These carbs use ball bearings to support the shafts, and they rarely bind--if they do, they're really gunked up. I had a similar problem on my DCOEs; next time you take them off, check to make sure that the butterflies are not binding on the carb throats. Sometimes the screws that secure the butterflies loosen just enough to allow one to drop down a tiny bit (a mm or so), which prevents the throttles from closing smoothly. If any butterflies are loose, push them around until, with the throttles completely closed (screw backed out), you see only a thin, uniform sliver of light around each flap. Consistency is very important, because the carbs won't balance right at idle if the flaps are misaligned.Mike
My weber pair do not seem to rest easily on the throttle idle screws. I was thinking of spraying some WD-40 on the throttle spindle bearings.
Would this be bad?
