72nevada is right, its the brake light switch. maybe you have a "non-bmw" unit like me, which is considerably longer than the OEM BMW unit. mine is actually long enough that the wires rub slightly against the firewall... not good, i expect it to wear through the wires sooner or later (yes, i will be ordering a new bmw one soon :).
