Picked up the 320is parts car yesterday. What a piece of crap. The guy was selling it as a driver. Totally rusted out towers, floors, doors, you name it. It had the stuff I wanted (LSD,5-speed, hubs, really nice Recaros, etc) so I bought it anyway. I drove it about a hundred miles before stopping for the night at the in-laws. Every mile away from the guys driveway was a gift. The motor had such bad rod knock that I nervously eyed the oil pressure light all the way waiting for the inevitable. When I would stop, smoke would rise from the left front brake due to the sticky caliper. This morning I took the wheel off to free it up some and got clued in to the previous owners maintenance program-none. The pads were worn down to the backing plates and had been that way for a good many miles as evidenced by the scariest looking gouged up rotors I've ever seen. That explained why the alloy wheels were "rusting". Ferrous brake dust. Really nice. Drove the other 100 miles home at 60 miles per. You don't realize how slow that is until you have to do it. I was passed like I was standing still by everyone. I remmembered back to driving a friends 320is, new at the time, and liking it.It was kind of sad to see this one so devastated but at least the parts, as another guy put it, are going to a good home. Thanks for listening.
