it LOOKED fine, just a little cracked. But when i unbolted it, it came apart in pieces. dont trust a visual on any guibo that is even moderately cracked.

Good luck 'becca!!!

While I haven't heard any noises come from a guibo unless it's really GONE, it is a good one to check the guibo. The guibo in my '69 02 looked good until I got real close to it, then I saw a few small cracks. When I removed it, it had LOTS of small cracks in it. Only a $30 part, easy to replace.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be too concerned about the immediate reliability of the transmission if only the synchros are bad. If the tranny is fine while just cruising, it probably still has some life left in it. I know it's not an 02, but I had a VW GTI that had bad 2nd and 3rd gear synchros which I drove for 60k miles without tranny problems. Still worked fine when I sold the car.

I would be concerned about the WHUNKING sound. Have a competent mechanic do a thorough inspection of the driveshaft (especially the guibo) and the hydrualic clutch linkage (make sure that something like the speedo cable isn't getting hung-up down there).
