Hey, if its a track car and you're not too concerned with original type appearance, why not just delete it, like you suggested...only thing I would do in this case would be to take the piece you are going to use to cover it to a sheet metal shop and have them roll in X-shaped 1/2" reinforcement ribs...

But, I would say that if this is the only serious corrosion in the car, replace the well with a good used one--it would not be that expensive to have someone graft this in and make a nice repair out of it...
