you're going to need to pull the lower timing cover also. The chain is continuous and goes inside of the timing chain. Since you're into the bowels of your engine, your karma will be increased by putting in a new oil pump.

For tension, the BMW manual saz: "Chain tension is correct if the chain can be pressed in with light thumb pressure"

Get a new lower front seal while you're at it
