To remove the old studs or put in new ones, use the "jam-nut" method. To do this, put two nuts on the outer threads (not the ones that go into the head) of a stud and tighten them against each other using two wrenches. Do not tighten them so much that you strip the threads, only enough to stop the nuts from rotating. Once they're tight you can use a wrench on one of the nuts to remove or install the stud. If you're installing, apply the wrench to the outermost nut so that it tightens further against the inner one; for removing, apply the wrench to the inner nut.

You can use loctite, though I've never seen exhaust studs vibrate loose if they're fully tightened down. Watch out when installing them, you don't want to strip the threads. I don't bother with a torque wrench, just tighten everything reasonably well. When putting the manifold back on, it's more important to get everything uniformly tight than it is to get everything to some particular value.

My exhaust bit it today going over some bumpy-ass 5 mile road, so i'm gonna take the opportunity to get it redone using 2.25pipe with a glasspack and freeflow muffler, and put my tii manifold on at the same time. So about the manifold...I'll have the 318 gasket and new studs/nuts from Paul this week. Any tips for putting it on? I have never even taken one off before. How do i get the old studs out? How do i put the new ones in (ie, high-temp loctite?) torque settings? any help appreciated.

thx
matt
