I have done it both ways, and it worked better putting in the whole unit as one. A little persuasion with a mallet to enlarge the transmission tunnel was helpful, and I would also suggest taking out the distributor as well.
If the car is not on a lift, getting the car up as high as possible was also key. It took me about 4 hours as a unit but about 6 hours for just the tranny.

Hope this small bit of experience helps.


As I recall I think it was said to be easyar putting the motor in then a trans. {maybe} but any way the motors in and the trans don't fit!!!!!!! I have the motor on the mounts but I can't get the trans to fit. Should I put the motor up and bolt the trans on off the mount so there is more room?I have the header off.
