I use the marks on the flywheel. When you are at TDC, you'll be able to see an "OT" through the hole in the bell housing. At exactly that same point in the rotation, you'll also see a mark on the timing gear that exactly splits the oil tube on the head (take the valve cover off, of course). At exactly that point in the rotation, you'll see that the cam lobes on cylinder #1 are on the botton and that the lobes on cylinder #4 are at the top.

A 30mm socket works great for me (I have no fan), but if you don't have a fresh hi compression engine, you should be able to turn the engine by pushing on the fan belt while pushing/pulling the fan towards the driver's side of the car.

I've never been a big fan of the pencil/chopstick in the cylinder approach, I was 'learned that it was very bad karma to turn the engine backwards (early 1800/1600 engines had a gear tensioner that would allow the timing chain to skip a tooth if they were turned backwards).
