Turns out the pos. was touching the alternator housing. I put a rubber spacer in there, which solved the arcing issues. Then I had the alternator tested, but it was drawing low current (12-12.5). I've ordered another alternator, but I wonder if replacing the rubber spacer with a washer would bump up the current.

by the way, the regulator works fine.
