Reinstalling a stock alternator for a '74. The B++ connection at the alternator is very hot to the touch. Is this normal? If not, then what? My grounds are good. Wires in good condition. Ack!

More info: The stock alternator makes a loud clunking noise at idle now and then, but otherwise it works fine. I decided to swap it before it went bad. I picked up a replacement at an auto parts store. Upon installing it and having it tested at the shop, I found it was defective. Then I decided I may as well upgrade to a 320i unit. A local shop had one, which I bought. Turns out it's a later model and doesn't fit. Now I want to run the original alternator while I track down the right replacement.

Yet somehow my love for the car grows deeper!
